Shiga Kogen has a range of Ski areas to choose from. At 1400m there is
Sun Vally Maruike, at 1700m there is Kuma-no-Yu, while Higashi Tateyama,
Terakoya, Yakebitaiyama are all at about 2000m, and the highest of them
all is Yokoteyama at 2300m. These are some of the highest ski area in all
of Japan, offering some of the best powder snow. |
There are frequent shuttle buses that loop around all the ski area, and
are free to use if you have a lift ticket. They run every 15 minutes or
so and it takes about 1 hour to get to Oku-Shiga and Ichinose.
It is also possible to get around the area using the ropeways and
gondolas. |

The Shiga Kogen area has 4 main ski areas, with a total of 70 lifts, and
gondolas. The main areas are:
Kuma-no-Yu, Yokoteyama Area
Sun Valley, Maruike, Hasugaike area
Ichinose, Takamagahara area
Yakebitaiyama, Oku-Shiga Area
Frequent shuttle buses travel between the areas. |

Shiga Kogen is well
known in Japan as a wonderful hiking area. With 23 courses, most
easily accessible for families, many Japanese find hiking in the
area a great way to explore nature. |

Hiking Courses in
the Hotel area |
The 3 courses closest to the hotel
are the Ike-Meguri Course (Around the lakes), the Kasadake
Summit Course, and the Yokoteyama Panorama Course. Both the Ike-Meguri
and Kasadake Courses start from right outside the hotel, while
the Yokoteyama course is a 10 minute bus ride away.
There are also the following short walks around the hotel area*
15 min course to Chuji's Hidden Rock
30 min course to the source of the Hotaru Hot Spring

Mizubasho Park |
|
This park near the
Kasadake Ski Area has a 500meter walkway (barrier free) to view the
Japanese Skunk Cabbages. The area is illuminated at night and is
well worth a look. |
Visit The Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen Koen)
The wild monkeys are the only ones that bathe in natural hot spring on Earth

How to get to the Monkey Park |

It takes about 35min by bus plus 20min on foot to the Monkey Park. From the Suzurikawa Bus Stop (2 min walk from our hotel), ride a bus bound for Hasuike or Yudanaka. Get off at Kambayashi Onsen Guchi Bus Stop. Walk the trail to the Monkey Park for 20 min. There are always visitors and photographers from all over the world. Please make sure not to feed the monkeys or scare them. If you are lucky, you can meet baby monkeys also.
